Welcome to my website. My name is Rian Miller. As of May 23, 2006 I am a graduate of the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in Dover, NJ. I’m now back home in Union Bridge, MD making a go of the whole freelance artist thing. It’s been a long journey to make it where I am today, which is seemingly right back where I started, but with any luck I’ll find a way to make a living doing what I love.
I began drawing at a very young age. Being a printer, my father used to bring home whole reams of computer paper for me to draw on. Armed with a Pepperidge Farms cookie tin full of Crayola markers and a wild imagination fueled by equal doses of Ghostbusters and a lack of interest in sports, I would create stacks and stacks of drawings. These days I don’t produce quite as much work, but the quality seems to have improved a bit.
I saw the movie Aliens for the first time in December of 1991. My parents never censored what I watched and in this case it was actually my father who recommended said movie to me. I was seven and Aliens has undisputedly been my favorite movie ever since.
I read my first comic book in January of 1995. It was Aliens: Berserker #1. My father brought it home for me knowing how much I liked the movies. I was ten and I’ve been collecting comic books since that time. Now when my father tells me I should stop wasting my money on them I simply remind him who got me interested in comics in the first place.
Making the obvious progression from Aliens to Predator, in March of 1999 I began reading a mini-series titled Predator: Homeworld. Inside one of the issues was a page with short bios of each contributor to the title, one of whom was the artist Toby Cypress. In his bio I learned that he had recently graduated from the Kubert School. I was fourteen and since then it was my goal to be a student at that institution.
Upon graduation from high school in 2003 I was accepted to, and the following Fall attended, the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art. As it turns out, Toby Cypress became a teacher there following my first year of attendance. During my three years at the school I was lucky enough to be taught by a group of professionals whose advice and lessons I hold in the highest regard including (but not limited to) Michael Kraiger, Darren Auck, Kim DeMulder, Toby, and Joe Kubert himself. Also during my time there I met a group of fellow students who have influenced my interests in and approach to art more than they may know, including Logan Ganshirt, Jesse Munoz, Andre Renaud, Chris Staggs, and Bruno Lobato among many others. For this, I thank them.
These days my influences are varied and many, but some of the professionals from whom I gather the most inspiration are (in no particular order) Warren Ellis, Brian Azzarello, Alexandro Jodorowsky, Travis Charest, Frank Quitely, Dave Johnson, Jason Pearson, Brian Stelfreeze, Richard Corben, Ross Campbell, Juan Giminez, Steve McNiven, Moebius, Dustin Nguyen, Sean Phillips, Eduardo Risso, Stuart Immonen, Olivier Coipel, Bryan Hitch, German Garcia, Massimiliano Frezzato, and Seth Fisher (R.I.P.) among others. Outside of the comic book industry, Guy Ritchie, David Fincher, and Philip K. Dick have been large influences as well.
My first published work exists in the form of a pin-up in issue #30 of the Image comic book Invincible by Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley, which can be found in the portfolio section of this site. In addition to writing scripts for several other artists, and continually working on an original Graphic Novel which I plan to script, pencil, ink, and letter myself, I am currently performing the art chores on a mini-series titled ‘Old Bones’, which is being written by Andrew Elder.
If you're interested in comissioning some work, you can reach me via the information on my Contact page.
